Biography

Dr. Roberto began his medical career at the University of Chile, where he earned his degree as a medical doctor and surgeon in January 1996. He commenced his training in orthopedics and traumatology at the Instituto Traumatológico in Santiago, graduating with the highest distinction and receiving the award for Best Resident in April 2004. He continued at the same institution to complete his subspecialty in foot and ankle surgery, after which he was invited to join the department’s permanent medical staff—a position he held for five years. Dr. Roberto also served as a postgraduate lecturer at the University of Chile until 2009. That same year, due to the shortage of orthopedic specialists in northern Chile, he relocated to the city of Antofagasta. There, he became actively involved in undergraduate medical education at the University of Antofagasta, inspiring new generations of medical students to pursue professional growth and continuous learning. He served as Head of the Department of Traumatology at the Regional Hospital of Antofagasta until January 2014, and as Head of the Foot and Ankle Unit at the same hospital from January 2009 to November 2015. In 2015, Dr. Roberto traveled to Europe to complete a fellowship in Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine under the guidance of the renowned Professor Dr. Joan C. Monllau, at ICATME in Barcelona (an ISAKOS & ESSKA Approved Teaching Center). From 2010 to 2023, he worked as a consulting orthopedic surgeon at Clínica Antofagasta and Clínica Regional La Portada (Chile). He later moved to the Middle East, becoming the first Chilean orthopedic surgeon to obtain a specialist license in the United Arab Emirates. There, he served as Head of the Medical Team at Desert Falcon Football Club from September 2023 to February 2024, and worked at Novomed Centers (Dubai, UAE) from August 2023 to March 2024. Since May 2024, he has been part of the medical team at SEHA Al Ain (Abu Dhabi, UAE), where he practices as an Orthopedic Specialist. Dr. Roberto holds a Diploma in Sports Medicine (2023) and is an active member of multiple prestigious international and regional medical societies, including: • European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy (ESSKA) • AO Trauma International • American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) • American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) • European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) • Latin American Society of Arthroscopy, Knee and Sports Traumatology (SLARD) • Chilean Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SCHOT), where he serves as an active member of both the Foot & Ankle Committee and the Knee & Sports Medicine Committee Dedicated to innovation and continuous professional development, Dr. Roberto has pursued numerous advanced training programs and international fellowships, always under the mentorship of world-renowned orthopedic surgeons.
